Review: Gulu Gulu Cafe
Do you Gulu?
Have you ever wondered what there is to do in Lynn? Well now local residents can kick back and relax in a wonderful café that’s just recently celebrated its one-year anniversary. Conveniently located downtown at 56 Central Square, Gulu-Gulu Café hosts a wide variety of events and refreshments. Steven M. Feldmann and Marie Feldmannova are Gulu’s proud owners. Steven, who has just finished his MBA in Business from North Eastern, was tired of working in a cubicle and wanted more out of life than a 9-5 job. He and his wife had thought about starting a café for a long time and decided it would be a good time to go into business. He proposed the idea to city of Lynn in July of 2004 and opened the café May of 2005. Now that they’ve been open for a solid year they’re confidant that this is a growing thing that will last. They’ve seen the potential in Lynn for far too long to not do anything about it. They’re hopeful that the people of Lynn will take hold of this new café/dining experience with enthusiasm and help the city of Lynn grow and bloom into a vibrant artistic community.
Its true Gulu-Gulu offers something for everyone. With a fabulous video projector and cozy couches they screen wonderfully eclectic indie films on a regular basis. They also have regular open mic nights and local talent is booked a month in advance to play every week. There’s also artwork featured on the beautiful brick walls of the café, which remains up for a three-month cycle. And if you’re worried that I haven’t mentioned the food yet its because I’ve saved the best for last. Their sandwiches are truly scrumptious and filling. (I recommend the Roast Beef on Ciabatta bread, which is baked fresh every day just down the street.) They also offer a wonderful array of beers, wines, liqueurs, and desserts. I always get the cheese platter because of my insatiable love of Boursin (a very well kept secret of the fine cheese lover). You can always check out their full menu and monthly schedule of events on their website www.gulu-gulu.com.
The name Gulu-Gulu is charmingly derived from the first Gulu-Gulu café where Steven met and fell in love with his now wife while he was studying abroad in Prague for a year doing his BA in Harvard’s Extension School. And what does Gulu-Gulu mean you ask? That was actually a mystery to Steven and Marie for quite a while until some of his French friends, who giggled when he mentioned the café, broke the silence. They politely told him that it mean “gulg glug”. So if there’s one place you just can’t get enough of this summer, let it be a quenching drink of Gulu-Gulu’s charm and friendly atmosphere.
